What is Firocoxib?
Firocoxib is used to decrease pain, inflammation, and fever. It has been used for the acute and chronic treatment of pain and inflammation in dogs. One of the most common uses is osteoarthritis , but it also has been used for pain associated with surgery. In horses, it is used for osteoarthritis and for pain associated with surgery. In cats, firocoxib has been demonstrated to be effective for attenuating acute febrile responses, but the use in cats is limited to short-term or long-term use at low doses.
Product Function:
1. Used for the control of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain and inflammation associated with soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery in dogs.
2. Used for the control of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.
Firocoxib is a member of the coxib class of NSAIDs. In vitro and in vivo data support firocoxib as a COX-1–sparing (COX-2–selective) drug. Firocoxib is approved as an oral formulation with an indication for the management of pain and inflammation associated with OA in dogs. Clinically it has been shown to improve limb function in dogs with OA. Clinical trials suggest that firocoxib may have some superiority in owner and veterinarian subjective evaluations with regard to lameness resolution when compared with carprofen and in etodolac dogs with lameness associated with OA. Long-term administration of firocoxib showed continued improvements over the year of treatment. Firocoxib is also effective in providing postoperative analgesia. Clinical data suggest a low rate of adverse events, limited primarily to the GI tract. Two additional studies that evaluated long-term therapy (90 days) with firocoxib in dogs (including geriatric animals) described minimal adverse events.
